Martello Tower P, Felixstowe

Project Description

Conservation and adaptation of a historic coastal defence tower.

We have been appointed by East Suffolk Council to assess the condition of Martello Tower P in Felixstowe and develop proposals for its conservation, repair and future use.

Built in the early nineteenth century as part of Britain’s coastal defences, the Grade II listed tower is also a Scheduled Monument and an important part of Felixstowe’s military and architectural heritage.

Working with specialist consultants, the practice is undertaking a detailed assessment of the building’s historic fabric and developing a conservation and repair strategy. This includes consideration of the masonry, external render, moisture penetration, drainage, original timber structure and significant architectural features. The approach aims to retain as much historic fabric as possible, using appropriate traditional materials and repair techniques.

Alongside the conservation work, the project is examining options to improve accessibility, visitor facilities and opportunities for public use, including educational activities and community events. The proposals must balance these requirements with the sensitive adaptation of a Scheduled Monument, while also accommodating the continued presence of the National Coastwatch Institution.

Currently at RIBA Stage 2, the project aims to establish a practical and sustainable approach to securing the tower’s long-term future and making this historic coastal landmark more accessible to the local community and visitors.
